The Hartford Appoints Dan Guilbert Chief Actuary Of Hartford Life

Guilbert to oversee corporate actuarial, business-risk management and investment-liaison functions for The Hartford's life insurance subsidiaries

SIMSBURY, Conn., Aug 14, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., (NYSE: HIG) has appointed Dan Guilbert as chief actuary of Hartford Life. Guilbert, a senior vice president, will oversee Hartford Life's corporate actuarial, business-risk management and investment-liaison functions.

Guilbert, who previously served as chief risk officer for Hartford Life, replaces Jim Trimble, senior vice president, as chief actuary. Trimble is retiring from Hartford Life after 31 years of service leading product design and pricing for various businesses.

In his new role, Guilbert will report to John Walters, president and chief operating officer of Hartford Life. Guilbert will be a member of Hartford Life's senior management committee and will be responsible for the life insurer's actuarial policies, product pricing and design, reinsurance, business risk management, variable annuity hedging, investment liaison and the actuarial student program.

"Dan has been instrumental in helping Hartford Life weather the recent storms in the financial markets," Walters said. "Dan's demonstrated leadership and expertise during his tenure as chief risk officer of Hartford Life will be invaluable as we move forward with our new business strategy."

Prior to his corporate risk management role, Guilbert was chief product and risk actuary for International Wealth Management. He also served as vice president and director of enterprise risk management for Hartford Life and worked in the investment products division where he helped develop the hedging strategy for variable annuities.

Guilbert earned a bachelor's degree in applied actuarial science from Bryant College, is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Trimble, before becoming chief actuary for Hartford Life, served as chief actuary for the International Division.

"Jim has been a strong leader of our actuarial discipline throughout his tenure at Hartford Life," Walters said. "He has been involved in every aspect of our business and has taken on new challenges wherever they arose. Jim helped develop and support what is recognized as one of the best actuarial development programs in the industry. We are thankful for Jim's contributions over the years and wish him well."

The Hartford's life insurance subsidiaries include Hartford Life Insurance Co., Hartford Life & Annuity Insurance Co., and Hartford Life & Accident Insurance Co.
